In the words of Robert Hunter, “You know better but I know him! Like a steam locomotive rolling down the track. He’s gone, he’s gone! And nothing’s going to bring him back!”

On Sunday, the inevitable occurred: Lane Kiffin took center stage for one final act in a long and drawn-out performance that likely didn’t unfold as he had envisioned. This marked his departure to Baton Rouge and the conclusion of the Lane Kiffin era in Oxford once and for all.

Despite a promising future ahead — having made history by securing Ole Miss‘s first-ever 11-win season, earning a shot at the College Football Playoff, and establishing financial resources for growth — it wasn’t enough to keep him from the allure of Baton Rouge.

What could have been an amicable farewell instead turned into quite a spectacle. Kiffin appeared torn between wanting to savor his success while also pursuing new opportunities. Ultimately, however, The Lane Train did not roll out with an entourage of coaches and players heading to Death Valley in some mass exodus. Instead, an administration, staff, and players remained steadfastly focused on making history right where they were — in the Velvet Ditch as Ole Miss Rebels.

Whenever there is a significant shift within a program, it is those who remain who must pick up the pieces and navigate through the aftermath. Yet even amid this turmoil lies an opportunity; perhaps this is the fuel that these coaches and athletes needed more than ever before, igniting a renewed sense of determination among those left behind.

This not only impacts the current state of affairs but also casts shadows on the recruiting efforts. With early signing day just around the corner, will Kiffin’s exit trigger a mass exodus among Rebels recruits? We spoke with current Ole Miss commits and prospects to gauge their reactions to Kiffin’s departure and what it means for their futures with the Rebels.

Nascar McCoy: Ole Miss Commit, 3-Star Safety, Buford (GA)

“Of course it shocked everybody at first, but honestly I’m still locked in with Ole Miss. Coach Golding has been real with us since day one, and the energy he brings is different. I feel like the program’s still moving forward.”

Rees Wise: Ole Miss Commit, 3 Star QB, Austin Westlake (TX)

“Well I’m not thrilled about all this – but what can you do? I’m signing my letter of intent this week. Kiffin was a big part about my decision to commit- but truly it was also about the GREAT coaching staff here in Oxford! They believe in me and I still believe in them. I’m just gonna continue to pray on this and hope things work out. As for Coach Golding, I only got to speak with him briefly during my visit. But from what I gathered from the players and coaches is that he’s well respected. I’m looking forward to talking with him in the near future.”

Jett Goldsberry: Ole Miss Commit, 3- ATH Heritage Hills (IN)

“I really like Coach Golding a lot.”

“Not really that much, I don’t think, just trying to figure everything out with the coaches and my agent/parents.” — On how it affects his commitment

Iverson McCoy: Ole Miss Commit, 3 Star Safety, Tupelo (MS)

“Idc for Lane departure from Ole Miss. I am happy that coach Pete stayed and coach Brown Stayed!”

Javarious Griffin Jr: 2027 3-Star WR Cleveland Central (MS)

“I think everything is God’s timing! I’m here with coach Pete and I’m going to riding with him and ole miss until the wheels fall off!” #HottyToddy

Jake Sneed: 2027 TE, The John Cooper School (TX)

“Lane’s departure was definitely a shock even though we figured he was leaving. It’s also surprising how fast they replaced him in DC Pete Golding>”

Cayden Dixon: 2028 QB, Father Ryan HS (TN)

“It happens. Coaches move. I’m still locked in on finding the best fit and seeing what Ole Miss does next.”

But when it all came down to it, even Lane Kiffin, despite his professed transformation and love of Oxford, still struggled to shed old habits when it came to parting ways. Nevertheless, the show will go on and the darkness will give way as the dawn of the Pete Golding Era has arrived, setting the next act for Ole Miss.

Lane Kiffin and No. 6 Ole Miss (10-1, 6-1 SEC) are on the brink of securing a spot in the College Football Playoff, but the path to that goal is fraught with challenges. In week 14, they will face their in-state rival, Mississippi State, while also navigating the distractions surrounding Kiffin’s future in the annual Egg Bowl showdown.

The stakes are high for Ole Miss. A victory would not only solidify one of the best seasons in program history but also secure a CFP berth. A loss to the Bulldogs—who are vying for bowl eligibility at 5-6—could leave the Rebels out of playoff contention and potentially also leave them in a coaching search.

In its final regular-season predictions, ESPN’s SP+ forecasts that Ole Miss will overcome these distractions and secure an Egg Bowl victory, projecting a 37-22 victory against Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium.

This matchup marks the 122nd all-time meeting between these two programs and the 98th edition of the Egg Bowl. The Rebels currently lead the all-time series against the Bulldogs with a record of 66-49-6 on the field and hold a commanding lead in the Egg Bowl series at 60-30-5.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET from Starkville on Friday with live coverage on ABC.

The No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide shut out Eastern Illinois 56-0 in Week 13 to get back on track following a their loss to the No. 11 Sooners in Week 12, 23-21. Now they close these with one of the South’s most heated rivalries, the Iron Bowl against Auburn

The Tigers are coming off a 67-12 win over Mercer. The debut of freshman quarterback Deuce Knight led Auburn with 239 yards on 15 of 20 passing for 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also carried the ball 9 times for 162 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns.

Alabama’s Germie Bernard joined the Next Round Live show to share his thoughts on how this year’s Iron Bowl will play out on the Plains.

“It’s obviously a great atmosphere, a place that a lot of people want to play,” Bernard said. “But who said we can’t change that? Who says we can’t go out there and blow them out how we did last year? Not saying they’re a bad team, they’re a great team.

“Like coach always says, we don’t have to make the games close.”

Bernard leads the Crimson Tide with 48 receptions for 676 yards and 6 receiving touchdowns this season. He didn’t see any action due to injury against Eastern Illinois but could return just in time to make his bold prediction a reality.

Alabama leads the all-time series 51–37–1 over Auburn. The 90th edition of the Iron Bowl is set to kick off is set 7:30 PM ET from Jordan Hare Stadium live on ABC.

OU’s postseason ambitions are not the only success it’s finding. On Monday, the Sooners notched a win on the recruiting trail, flipping 4-star running back Jonathan Hutton from Texas A&M.

The Cibolo-Steele standout stands at 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, initially committed to Oklahoma early in the process but later switched his commitment to Texas A&M. However, Oklahoma remained persistent in its efforts to bring Hutton back into the fold, culminating in his recommitment ahead of the early signing period scheduled for December 3-5.

As the saying goes, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts.” Speculation is at an all-time high regarding Lane Kiffin‘s role following the annual battle for the Golden Egg. This uncertainty looms over the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels, who stand at 10-1 and are on the cusp of securing their first College Football Playoff berth with a victory against in-state rival Mississippi State, currently 5-6 and seeking bowl eligibility.

Amidst this backdrop, two standout players from Ole Miss are committed to reassuring both their teammates and fans that their focus remains firmly on winning the Egg Bowl. They emphasize a “1-0” mindset aimed squarely at defeating Mississippi State as they prepare to conclude the regular season.

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss conveyed this message to the Rebel nation:

“To our fans, this team is completely locked in, living in the moment, and staying true to our 1-0 mindset for the Egg Bowl and future games. We are unbothered by anything about next year and fully trusting Coach Kiffin’s leadership to keep us moving toward our goals!”

Chambliss was not the only Rebel to keep the focus on the mission at hand. Doak Walker Award semifinalist, RB Kewan Lacy, took to social media to share:

“BTA family—Despite all of the outside distractions, me and my brothers are locked in and committed to finishing what we started with our Leader & Head Coach @LaneKiffin. Locked in, focused, and chasing 1–0 every week,” Lacy shared.

The noise surrounding LSU‘s aggressive pursuit of Lane Kiffin is hard to ignore, particularly with reports of a potential seven-year offer valued at a minimum of $90 million. This deal would also include a highly lucrative package aimed at enhancing roster investments, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, and recruiting efforts. If finalized, Kiffin would rank among the highest-paid coaches in the nation.

As it stands, Ole Miss faces uncertainty regarding its ability to match this enticing offer. The Rebels will remain in suspense until after the Egg Bowl showdown on Nov. 29th, when the announcement is set to be given on the future of Kiffin. Ole Miss leads the all-time series against Mississippi State with a record of 66-46-6. However, with a bowl berth on the line and a stage full of distractions looming, head coach Jeff Lebby is looking to use that for leverage of his own. Kickoff is set for Noon ET from Davis-Wade Stadium in Starkville.

Mississippi State will be looking for redemption after suffering a disappointing 49-27 loss to Missouri in Week 12. A victory over Lane Kiffin‘s Rebels would not only secure bragging rights but also make them bowl eligible.

Although it may not fall on the traditional Third Saturday in September, the rivalry between Florida and Tennessee remains a significant matchup within the SEC. The Florida Gators (3-7, 2-5 SEC) have struggled recently, remaining winless on the road. However, they hope to find some momentum as they return home to The Swamp in Week 13 to face the No. 23 Tennessee Volunteers, who boast a record of 7-3 this season and are evenly split at 3-3 in conference play.

ESPN’s Football Power Index projections for the week have the odds stacked against the Gators even at home, with Tennessee holding a 65% chance of winning compared to Florida’s 35%.

Despite their recent challenges, Florida has historically dominated this series, leading with a record of 32 wins to Tennessee’s 22 over their 54 meetings. The Gators enjoyed an impressive winning streak from 2005 to 2015, during which they won eleven consecutive games against the Volunteers.

However, they enter this contest following a loss to Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels, falling short with a score of 34-23. Quarterback DJ Lagway completed 16 of his 31 passes for 218 yards, recording one touchdown and one interception. He also contributed on the ground with eight carries for 34 yards and one rushing touchdown. Running back Jaden Baugh added to the offense with 61 rushing yards on fifteen carries and another touchdown while also making four receptions for sixteen yards.

Tennessee had no trouble securing a decisive victory against New Mexico State, winning by a score of 42-9. Quarterback Joey Aguilar led his team effectively with a performance that included completing seventeen of twenty-three passes for 204 yards, along with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed three times for thirty-four yards and scored once on the ground. Running back DeSean Bishop was instrumental as well, amassing eighty rushing yards on sixteen carries and adding another touchdown while contributing four receptions for twenty-six yards.

Florida has been attempting to regroup since parting ways with head coach Billy Napier earlier in the season. A series of injuries have further strained their depth and impacted their ability to maintain competitiveness in games. As they prepare to return home under Friday night lights, they will be looking for redemption and aiming to close out their season on some positive note. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET in Gainesville.

Week 13 marks the 81st meeting between the Texas Longhorns and the Arkansas Razorbacks. The No. 13 Longhorns hold a commanding lead in the all-time series, with a record of 57-23 against Arkansas. As Texas enters this matchup with a season record of 7-3, it remains in contention for the College Football Playoff (CFP). In contrast, Arkansas struggles at 2-8, seeking to find some momentum as it approaches the end of its season.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), an upset seems unlikely for Arkansas this week, as it gives Texas an 83.1% chance of victory compared to Arkansas’s 16.9%.

Arkansas narrowly lost to LSU by a score of 23-22. Quarterback Taylen Green completed 11 of his 19 passes for a total of 165 yards and did not throw any touchdowns while recording two interceptions. Green contributed on the ground, rushing for 70 yards and scoring one touchdown on 17 carries. Running back Quintrevion Wisner managed just 37 rushing yards on nine carries and had two receptions totaling ten yards. DeAndre Moore Jr. was a bright spot for Texas, recording five catches for a total of 75 yards.

Mizzou (7-3,3-3 SEC) is set to travel to Norman for an SEC showdown against the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners (8-2,4-2 SEC), with early odds favoring Brent Venables’s team by more than a touchdown as OU heads into this Week 13 matchup.

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) projects how it plays out for these two former Big 12 rivals in their renewed SEC clash, projecting a strong likelihood of an Oklahoma victory at 65.4%. Mizzou, on the other hand, has a 35.8% chance of pulling off an upset on the road.

The Tigers enter this game following a decisive 49-28 win over Mississippi State in Week 12. Running back Ahmad Hardy led the way with a historic performance of 25 carries for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Matt Zollers completed 8 of 15 passes for 112 yards, along with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Meanwhile, the Sooners knocked off Alabama by a score of 23-21. Quarterback John Matteer threw for 138 yards on 15 of 23 passing attempts without any touchdowns or interceptions. He also rushed ten times for 23 yards and scored one rushing touchdown. Running back Xavier Robison added to the offense with ten carries for 34 yards and two receptions totaling eight yards.

After seven failed attempts in the overall series, the Tigers broke their winless streak in 2010. Mizzou was still in the Big 12 and the BCS was still intact. Blaine Gabbert led the then-No. 18 Tigers to a surprising upset over the Sooners, winning by a score of 36-27 at home in Columbia. The Tigers would repeat history in 2024 but this time as members of the SEC. Zion Young would return a fumble recovery for 17 yards with 22 seconds left on the clock that led Mizzou to upset Oklahoma 30-23. However, both have been at home in Columbia. The Tigers haven’t won in Norman since 1966.

This could be another intriguing battle, particularly in third-down situations, where both teams’ defensive capabilities are comparable. Both squads are currently tied at No. 13 in FBS with a third-down conversion percentage allowed of just 31.1%.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET from Norman and will be broadcast on ABC.

Better late than never, seems to be the best way to describe Kentucky as it approaches the final stretch of the regular season. While the Wildcats’ performance has been far from perfect, there is something significant about when a team’s potential and ability finally come to fruition. Although the Cats are not contending for an SEC championship or a College Football Playoff berth, they still have a chance to secure a postseason appearance. With a record of 5-5 overall and 2-5 in the SEC, they are just one win away from bowl eligibility.

The Wildcats have seemingly risen from adversity and seek their third conference win. As Week 13 approaches, they will face No. 12 Vanderbilt on the road. The Commodores boast an impressive record of 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the SEC.

Despite Kentucky’s recent momentum, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) offers a less optimistic outlook for Week 13. The latest projections give Vanderbilt a 76.5% chance of victory compared to Kentucky’s 23.5%, indicating that securing bowl eligibility will be challenging for the Wildcats in Nashville.

The Commodores enter this matchup well-rested after enjoying a bye week in Week 12. In their last game, they defeated Auburn 45-38 in Week 11, with quarterback Diego Pavia leading the offense by throwing for 377 yards on 25 of 33 passing attempts, resulting in three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also contributed significantly on the ground, with 112 rushing yards and one touchdown from 18 carries. Running back Sedrick Alexander delivered an electrifying performance with two rushing touchdowns on ten carries for 39 yards and added one reception for 13 yards. Tre Richards also made his mark with three catches for 124 yards and one touchdown.

Kentucky recently ended Tennessee Tech’s undefeated golden streak of 10-0 by delivering its first loss of the season. Quarterback Cutter Boley threw for an impressive 236 yards on just 18 of 21 attempts, achieving one touchdown without any interceptions while adding another rushing touchdown on three carries for 24 yards. Running back Dante Dowdell contributed with a solid performance, carrying the ball thirteen times for 87 yards and one rushing touchdown. Receiver Kendrick Law capped off Week 12 with an outstanding display, totaling 124 yards on eleven receptions.

These two founding programs of the SEC have faced each other a total of 97 times, with Kentucky holding a slight edge in the all-time series at 48–44–4. This rivalry ranks as the second-longest in Kentucky’s history, behind the storied competition with Tennessee. It is known to be one of the more evenly matched rivalries within the SEC; notably, forty-one matchups have been decided by seven points or fewer.

Mark Stoops and his ball club have turned the corner somewhat as they head into their matchup in Nashville; the question remains: will they achieve a Cats Coup? We will see; kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET in Nashville and will be broadcast live on ESPN.

The Tigers are looking to rebound at home after suffering defeats in their last two games, including a disappointing 38-17 loss to Texas A&M. Quarterback Matt Zollers faced challenges against the Aggies, completing only 7 of 22 passes. The Tigers have leaned heavily on their ground game, led by running back Ahmad Hardy, who has also rushed for 1,685 yards. In terms of receiving threats, Kevin Coleman Jr. has emerged as one of the primary pass-catchers with 559 receiving yards.

Mississippi State is attempting to turn around its fortunes after dropping four out of its last five outings. In the Week 11 loss to Georgia, freshman quarterback Kamario Taylor stepped in during the third quarter after Blake Shapen left due to injury and completed 6 out of 10 passes for the Bulldogs. Running back Fluff Bothwell leads the ground attack with 524 rushing yards so far this season, while Brenen Thompson remains a key target in the passing game with 808 receiving yards. On defense, Mississippi State faces its own challenges as well, surrendering an average of 35 points over its last five contests.

It remains uncertain whether veteran quarterback Blake Shapen will return for the Bulldogs against Mizzou; he has thrown for a total of 2,234 yards this season, but has dealt with injuries. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 PM ET at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.

Arkansas enters Week 12 of the SEC season still seeking its first conference victory, standing at 0-5. The Razorbacks will travel to Baton Rouge to face LSU, a team that has faced its own challenges this season and is currently on a three-game losing streak.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), the odds favor LSU in this matchup, giving the Bayou Bengals a 69.3% chance of winning at home in Death Valley, while Arkansas has a 30.7% chance of securing its first SEC win.

In their last outing during Week 10, Arkansas fell to Mississippi State with a score of 38-25. Quarterback Taylen Green completed 19 of 31 passes for 194 yards, contributing one touchdown without any interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown on 17 carries for 46 yards. Running back Mike Washington had an impressive performance as well, rushing for 116 yards on 19 attempts and scoring once, in addition to making four receptions for another 19 yards. Raylen Sharpe was the leading receiver with five catches totaling 84 yards.

On the other hand, LSU’s hopes for momentum were dashed in their recent game against Alabama, where the Tigers lost 20-9. Offensive struggles led to veteran starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier being benched for backup Michael Van Buren. Running back Harlem Berry rushed for 66 yards on 12 carries, while Zavion Thomas recorded five receptions for a total of 49 yards.

The Bayou Bengals have won the last 3 matchups of the rivalry series, with their biggest win being 56-20 back in 2019. As both teams look to gain momentum heading into this crucial matchup, LSU aims to become bowl-eligible with a victory at home in Week 12. The Battle of the Golden Boot kicks off at 12:45 PM ET on the SEC Network.

The No. 10 Texas Longhorns have faced a challenging season but have managed to grind out victories in conference play, keeping their College Football Playoff (CFP) aspirations alive. Their next test comes in Athens, where they will take on Kirby Smart and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. This matchup represents one of the toughest challenges for Arch Manning and the Longhorns, particularly against Georgia’s elite offense.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), Georgia holds a 59.8% chance of victory over Texas, which stands at 40.2%.

Georgia enters this game following a convincing 41-21 win against Mississippi State in Week 11. Quarterback Gunner Stockton excelled, throwing for 264 yards on 18 of 19 attempts with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also contributed on the ground with six carries for 31 yards. Running back Nate Frazier had an impressive performance as well, rushing for 181 yards on just 12 carries and scoring one touchdown, while Noah Thomas recorded three receptions for 78 yards and another touchdown.

Texas last played in Week 10, narrowly defeating Vanderbilt with a score of 34-31. Arch Manning led the Longhorns with an impressive performance, passing for 328 yards on 25 of 35 attempts with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Running back Quintrevion Wisner added to the offense with 75 rushing yards on 18 carries and one touchdown, along with two receptions for an additional 28 yards. Ryan Wingo was also a key contributor with two receptions totaling 89 yards and one touchdown.

As they prepare for Week 12, the Longhorns will face an elite Georgia defense that ranks among the best in college football—25th overall in total defense, third in the SEC, and seventh in touchdowns allowed. The Bulldogs are particularly strong against the run, allowing only an average of 94.1 rushing yards per game—a significant challenge for Texas’ ground game that averages about 158 rushing yards per contest.

However, Texas has opportunities to exploit certain vulnerabilities within Georgia’s defense, particularly concerning their pass coverage and rush pressure. The Bulldogs’ secondary has shown weaknesses when facing effective passing attacks, often leading them to ease pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

This matchup is pivotal not only within the SEC but also for both teams’ playoff ambitions; it promises to be a thrilling contest that could come down to a dramatic fourth quarter in Athens. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET at Sanford Stadium and will be broadcast live on ABC.

Heading into Week 12, six SEC teams are positioning themselves strongly for the College Football Playoff (CFP). Among them are No. 12 Oklahoma (7-2, 3-2 SEC) and No. 4 Alabama (8-1, 6-0 SEC), who will face off in a midday showdown at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide remains undefeated in conference play with a perfect record of 6-0. According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), Alabama has a 71.6% chance of extending that streak to 7-0 on Saturday against the Sooners, who sit at 28.4%.

Alabama is coming off a decisive victory over LSU, winning 20-9 in Week 11. Quarterback Ty Simpson led the team with an impressive performance, throwing for 277 yards on 21 of 35 attempts, including one touchdown and no interceptions. Wide receiver Germie Bernard added to the offensive effort with three catches totaling 79 yards.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma enters this matchup refreshed after a much-needed bye week following its narrow win against Tennessee in Week 10, where OU triumphed 33-27. Quarterback John Mateer had a solid outing, completing all his passes—19 attempts for 159 yards—though he did not throw any touchdowns and recorded one interception. He also showcased his dual-threat ability by rushing for another touchdown on 16 carries that netted him 80 yards. Running back Xavier Robinson was instrumental as well, accumulating 115 yards and one touchdown on his own set of touches.

Alabama’s run game has been inconsistent throughout the season; if Oklahoma can find a way to neutralize the ground attack and keep Ty Simpson from finding rhythm, it could lead to an intriguing contest at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Even if the Sooners manage to keep the game close but ultimately fall short against Alabama, it may not significantly impact their CFP aspirations. For Oklahoma’s offense to succeed against Alabama’s formidable defense—which ranks 18th overall in FBS by allowing just over 303 yards per game—they will need standout performances from both Mateer and emerging talent Tory Blaylock.

Alabama is heavily favored against Oklahoma as it aims to maintain its flawless conference record, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET live on ABC from Tuscaloosa.

This will be the first game for the Bayou Bengals since the firing of Brian Kelly, and despite the turmoil surrounding the program, LSU could become an even more lethal opponent in their quest to challenge No. 4 Alabama. The Crimson Tide currently boasts a record of 7-1 and remains undefeated in SEC play at 5-0.

In this intense SEC rivalry, will luck and analytics favor either team? According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) for Week 11, Alabama is heavily favored with an 80.8% chance of victory over LSU, which sits at just 19.2%.

LSU has struggled to regain its footing this season, suffering a defeat against Vanderbilt followed by a disappointing loss to Texas A&M, a 49-25 defeat at home. This loss effectively dashed any hopes for a title run or a College Football Playoff appearance, marking a challenging end for Kelly’s tenure in Baton Rouge.

Now, Frank Wilson steps in as interim head coach for LSU, aiming to harness the team’s potential against Alabama. Despite recent setbacks, LSU possesses considerable talent and still has the capability to finish strong this season. However, the Tigers must improve their struggling ground game and enhance their blocking and tackling if they hope to score points against the Tide. Perhaps they will channel their frustrations into a determined performance come Week 11.

Alabama remains resilient and has demonstrated an ability to secure victories even in tight situations. Yet, the Tide are not invincible; they had close calls against teams like Georgia, South Carolina, and Missouri. This matchup will transcend mere strategy; it will test which team can endure under pressure. The Tide knows how to navigate challenging games at home in Tuscaloosa.

This storied rivalry is deeply rooted in Southern football tradition and may take on a different dynamic with DeBoer looking to establish his legacy at Alabama while Wilson strives to maintain momentum for LSU. Historically, Alabama leads the all-time series with a record of 57 wins, 27 losses, and 5 ties.

The First Saturday in November rivalry returns with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 PM ET at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

They say slow and steady wins the race, and Jeff Lebby appears to be embodying that philosophy in Starkville as the Mississippi State Bulldogs steadily gain momentum. Mississippi State has just one victory in the SEC and is only one win away from bowl eligibility. However, they will need to overcome Kirby Smart and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs in Week 11.

Can they achieve the improbable at Scott Field? While college football often loves a good upset and underdog story, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gives Georgia a commanding 79% chance of winning on the road, compared to Mississippi State’s 21%.

Georgia enters this matchup following a narrow 24-20 victory over the Florida Gators in Week 10. Quarterback Gunner Stockton led the offense with an impressive performance, throwing for 224 yards on 20 of 29 passing attempts, including two touchdowns and one interception. Running back Chauncey Bowens contributed significantly with nine carries for 70 yards and one touchdown, while wide receiver Zachariah Branch rounded out the offensive effort with ten receptions for 113 yards.

On the other hand, Mississippi State is riding high after a close win against Arkansas, finishing with a score of 38-35. Bulldogs quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 242 yards on 16 of 28 passes, achieving two touchdowns alongside one interception. Running back Kamario Taylor added to their success with six carries totaling 55 rushing yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Anthony Evans III was also pivotal, recording five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

This matchup marks the 28th encounter between these two SEC teams. Historically, Georgia has dominated the series with a record of 21-6 against Mississippi State, currently enjoying a five-game winning streak.

Lebby and his team aim to halt Georgia’s momentum at home in Starkville, with kickoff scheduled for noon ET.

No one has yet to derail the No. 3 Fighting Texas A&M Aggies, who remain undefeated at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the SEC, presenting even more of an opportunity for the No. 22 Missouri Tigers in Week 11. Missouri is eager to secure its first victory over a top-five team since 2010, though the path to postseason contention remains difficult.

ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) gives Texas A&M the edge with a 56.5% chance of victory, compared to Missouri’s 43.5% likelihood of handing the Aggies their first loss.

Both teams enter Week 11 well-rested after bye weeks. In their last outing, Texas A&M decisively defeated LSU with a score of 49-25. Meanwhile, Missouri seeks redemption following a narrow loss to then-No. 10 Vanderbilt, where they fell short by just one touchdown, losing 17-10.

Despite slim chances of reaching the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff, the Tigers still have significant stakes in this matchup. However, they will be without quarterback Beau Pribula, placing additional pressure on freshman Matt Zollers as he makes his first start. MU possesses several playmakers who can contribute offensively but will face a stern test against Texas A&M’s robust defense. A critical factor will be whether Missouri’s defense can contain Marcel Reed and the dynamic Aggie offense; defensive end Zion Young will play a pivotal role in creating disruption.

Texas A&M continues its ascent in college football; few anticipated its sustained success this season. Quarterback Marcel Reed has made substantial strides in leading the Aggie offense while the defense consistently excels week after week, positioning them as strong contenders for a National Championship appearance. With three regular-season games remaining—against South Carolina and Samford before concluding with their storied rivalry against Texas—the focus now shifts to facing a surprise challenger in Missouri.

This matchup marks another chapter in the history between these former Big 12 foes; they have met only 17 times previously, with Texas A&M holding a narrow lead in the all-time series at 10-7, having won their last two encounters.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET from Columbia.

The rivalry between Florida and Kentucky may not be as widely discussed in college football, largely due to the Gators’ dominance over the series for decades. However, as both teams prepare for their Week 11 matchup in Lexington, they find themselves struggling with identical 3-5 records, each hoping to keep their bowl game aspirations alive.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), Florida is projected to secure a road victory with a probability of 58.3%, while Kentucky has a 41.7% chance of winning.

Kentucky recently broke a losing streak by defeating Auburn on the road, clinching a narrow 10-3 victory that appeared to be the final straw leading to Auburn’s head coach Hugh Freeze being fired. Quarterback Cutter Boley displayed improved confidence, throwing for 161 yards on 18 of 29 attempts, including one touchdown and two interceptions. Receiver Kendrick Law contributed significantly with six catches for 49 yards and one touchdown.

In contrast, Florida put up a strong fight against Georgia but ultimately fell short, losing 24-20. Quarterback DJ Lagaway completed 15 of 24 passes for 166 yards and one touchdown without any interceptions. He also contributed on the ground with ten carries for 24 yards. Running back Jaden Baugh added to the offense with 72 rushing yards on 15 attempts and one touchdown, while Eugene Wilson III recorded nine receptions for 121 yards and another touchdown.

This Saturday evening’s contest in Lexington promises to be intriguing. Florida has struggled to secure victories away from home this season, currently sitting at an unflattering record of 0-4 in road games. In the Gators’ last three away matches, they have been outscored by a combined total of 80-34. Their recent performances have been marred by turnovers and offensive inefficiencies; however, they still are a strong team, especially when it comes to their defense.

On the other hand, the Wildcats appears to have regained their footing following the win against Auburn, which could provide them with momentum heading into this critical matchup against Florida. Still, they will have to do more than just show up here and their to fend off the Gators even on their home turf.

Under interim coach Billy Gonzales, Florida looks to continue to show resilience, and DJ Lagaway thrives under pressure. The game is set to kick off at Kroger Field at 7:30 p.m. ET.

As college football programs prepare for their “November to Remember,” several quarterbacks are distinguishing themselves in the race for postseason honors. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, in collaboration with the A.O. Smith Corporation, has announced its top 10 quarterbacks for the 2025 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. This prestigious accolade is awarded to the top upperclassman quarterback in college football who not only demonstrates exceptional skills on the field but also embodies excellence in character and leadership.

John Unitas Jr., President of the Golden Arm Educational Foundation, stated, “This group has shown tremendous growth and leadership throughout the season. They’ve proven themselves as not only outstanding quarterbacks, but as true representatives of what the Golden Arm Award stands for — excellence on the field and character off it.”

Among this year’s top 10 finalists, three players come from the SEC: Vanderbilt‘s Diego Pavia, Texas A&M‘s Marcel Reed and Georgia‘s Gunner Stockton.

Pavia has been instrumental in leading the Commodores to a 7-1 record and their highest ranking at No.7 since 1937. He has completed 139 passes for 1,698 yards and 15 touchdowns while also rushing for 458 yards and five touchdowns.

Reed’s rising across all facets of his game has propelled the No.3 Aggies to an undefeated record of 8-0, including significant road victories at Notre Dame and LSU. He has thrown for 1,972 yards and 17 touchdowns while adding 349 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

The steadfast Stockton has led the No. 5 Bulldogs to 601 in their quest for another national title. With a dual-threat capability evidenced by his passing stats (1,553 yards) and rushing totals (279 yards), he showcased his resilience during a thrilling come-from-behind victory against Ole Miss with a final score of 43-35.

Stockton, Reed, and Pavia are joined by fellow finalists:

– Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati

– Miller Moss, Louisville

– Darian Mensah, Duke

– Fernando Mendoza, Indiana

– Haynes King, Georgia Tech

– Josh Hoover, TCU

– Carson Beck, Miami

The winner of the Golden Arm Award will be announced later this year during the annual award ceremony in Baltimore, Maryland.

The battle of two SEC teams that are vying for their first conference victory of the season. Mississippi State has struggled significantly, enduring a 16-game losing streak in the SEC that dates back to October 2023. Despite these challenging times, head coach Jeff Lebby’s squad has shown resilience, narrowly missing victories in close contests against Texas, Florida, and Tennessee this season.

Meanwhile, Arkansas enters the game with a record of 2-6. Interim head coach Bobby Petrino has revitalized the offense, leading to competitive performances where four of their losses were by just one score. However, “what could have been” does not translate into wins.

One team will emerge with a much-needed conference win this week, and ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) favors Arkansas with a projected 60% chance of victory over Mississippi State’s 40%.

The Bulldogs are coming off a strong offensive performance against Texas, where quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 382 yards and five touchdowns against a formidable Longhorns defense. The Bulldogs appear to be finding their rhythm with a more balanced offensive approach and an energized defense that is generating turnovers. A critical question remains: will Mississippi State’s anticipated ground game finally make its mark? If it does, it could prove decisive against an Arkansas defense that has allowed over 200 rushing yards in four of its last five games. While the Razorbacks have demonstrated some ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks, they may struggle to contain an effective ground attack.

Both teams possess productive offenses; however, Arkansas has shown greater depth in its scoring capabilities. The key challenge for both squads will be converting offensive production into tangible wins. Notably, quarterback Taylen Green has been improving steadily, particularly evident in his performance against Auburn. The Razorbacks aim to establish control early in the game to limit Mississippi State’s opportunities.

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET from Fayetteville and will air on the SEC Network.

The No. 7 Ole Miss Rebels are riding high, and head coach Lane Kiffin has emerged as one of the most sought-after coaches as the coaching carousel begins to spin in the latter half of the season. The Rebels secured a road victory against the Oklahoma Sooners, positioning themselves for a strong finish if they continue to perform well. Meanwhile, South Carolina is eager to make its mark in the SEC after coming close to an upset against Alabama in Week 9, ultimately falling short with a score of 29-22.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), Ole Miss is heavily favored with an 81% chance of defeating South Carolina, which stands at just 19%, when they meet in Oxford.

In its latest game, Ole Miss edged out Oklahoma 34-26, improving its overall record to 7-1 and conference record to 4-1. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw for 315 yards on 24 of 44 attempts, contributing one touchdown without any interceptions. He also rushed for 53 yards on 12 carries. Kewan Lacy was instrumental on the ground, carrying the ball 27 times for 78 yards and scoring two touchdowns while adding two receptions for another 17 yards. Freshman Winnie Watkins had a standout performance with four catches totaling 111 yards against the Sooners.

South Carolina faced a tough challenge against Alabama in Week 9 but fell short despite a valiant effort. LaNorris Sellers passed for 222 yards on an 18-of-32 completion rate, registering one touchdown and one interception. He also contributed significantly on the ground with eight carries for 67 yards and one rushing touchdown. Nyck Harbor added another layer of offense with one catch that resulted in a touchdown.

Initially poised for a promising season thanks to Sellers’ dynamic play and a once-formidable defense, South Carolina’s fortunes have taken a downturn as they struggle to maintain momentum. Their defense, which was previously ranked among the top thirty teams nationally in tackles, has seen its effectiveness decline sharply. Given that Ole Miss averages an impressive 37 points per game under Chambliss’s leadership, South Carolina will face significant challenges defending against them—especially away from home at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Historically, Ole Miss leads the all-time series against South Carolina with ten wins compared to eight losses and has won their last two encounters. The Rebels aim to extend this winning streak when they meet again in Week 10. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. ET from Oxford.

The post ESPN’s FPI predicts the outcome of Auburn vs. Kentucky appeared first on Saturday Down South.

It has been a challenging season for the Kentucky Wildcats. In Week 9, Mark Stoops and his team struggled against the Tennessee Volunteers, suffering a 56-34 defeat. Meanwhile, Auburn secured its first SEC victory of the season with a 33-24 win over Arkansas and now returns home to The Plains with renewed momentum as November begins.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), Auburn is favored to win this matchup with a probability of 77.1%, compared to Kentucky’s 22.9%. The Wildcats remain winless in SEC play at 0-5. Despite moments that suggested they might turn their season around, Kentucky has consistently failed to capitalize on opportunities. A significant issue has been their offensive line, which has struggled to protect the quarterback effectively. Additionally, their pass rush has lacked consistency.

However, there may be an opportunity for Kentucky to disrupt an Auburn offense that is only averaging 17.4 points per game against SEC opponents. While Auburn lacks explosive offensive firepower, the Tigers have managed a unique quarterback situation by alternating between Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels, who performed well against Arkansas. One advantage for Auburn is its ability to avoid turnovers and minimize penalties.

Although Auburn’s season has not been stellar thus far, they enter this game with more options and weapons at its disposal. AU’s defense can meet the challenge against a struggling Kentucky attack that seeks to find its rhythm, particularly following some promising performances from young quarterback Cutter Boley.

This matchup represents a critical moment for both coaches as they look to call off the dogs, at least for one more week, with the mounting pressure following a tough stretch of performance this season. While Kentucky will put forth a competitive effort and generate some scoring drives, overcoming Auburn’s strong pass rush will prove difficult. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers, currently holding a 3-4 record, are aiming to rebound against the Arkansas Razorbacks in Week 9.

The Tigers suffered a narrow defeat to Missouri in their last outing, losing 23-17. Meanwhile, the Razorbacks are coming off a closely-contested loss of their own, falling 45-42 to the Texas A&M Aggies.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), this matchup is expected to be tight. FPI gives Arkansas a 50.7% chance to win the game in Fayetteville.

Both teams are seeking redemption after disappointing performances in conference play. Arkansas faced a close one in Week 8 against Texas A&M where Taylen Green threw for 256 yards on 19 of 32 attempts, with 3 touchdowns without any interceptions. He also contributed significantly on the ground with 12 carries for 85 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.

Auburn extended its losing streak in Week 8. Quarterback Jackson Arnold led the Tigers with 207 passing yards on 18 of 30 attempts but struggled with no touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for one touchdown on 17 carries totaling just 14 yards.

Kickoff at Donald W. Reynolds Stadium in Fayetteville is set for 12:45 PM ET.

Since suffering a setback against Florida State at the beginning of the season, Alabama has reversed its fortunes and emerged as one of the strongest teams in the nation.

Its recent success has significantly boosted Ty Simpson’s Heisman Trophy candidacy. In contrast, South Carolina finds itself at 3-4, grappling with numerous challenges throughout the season with finding offensive identity and consistency.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), an upset appears unlikely even with South Carolina playing at home in William-Brice Stadium under head coach Shane Beamer. FPI gives Alabama an 82.4% chance of victory compared to South Carolina’s slim 17.6% chance of pulling off an upset in Week 9.

Alabama has consistently showcased a dominant and efficient offense paired with a formidable defense. In their recent win over Tennessee, the Tide triumphed 37-20, with Simpson throwing for 253 yards on 19 of 29 passes. The team’s victories have been characterized by a balanced attack capable of advancing both on the ground and through the air. Alabama’s defense has also excelled in limiting opponents’ yardage and scoring opportunities.

Conversely, South Carolina continues to face difficulties, most recently falling to Oklahoma by a score of 26-7. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers completed 17 of 25 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM ET from William Brice Stadium in Columbia and will be broadcast live on ABC.

The post ESPN’s FPI projects winner of Missouri vs. Vanderbilt clash appeared first on Saturday Down South.

Rarely do Vanderbilt and Missouri receive accolades within the SEC, but as they approach Week 9, both teams are proving they are not merely the underdogs.

The Commodores currently rank No. 10 in the nation with a record of 6-1, following a significant victory over LSU, where they triumphed 31-24. Similarly, Missouri boasts a matching 6-1 record after their recent win against Hugh Freeze’s Auburn Tigers.

The upcoming matchup between these two teams is generating interest, with ESPN’s Football Power Index favoring Missouri with a 55.5% chance of victory against Vanderbilt.

Diego Pavia has emerged as a key player for the Commodores, throwing for 160 yards and one touchdown while completing 14 of his 22 passes against Auburn. In addition to his passing performance, he contributed significantly on the ground with 17 carries for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cole Spence was instrumental in the receiving game, catching five passes for 56 yards and one touchdown.

Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula completed 23 of his 40 passes for 252 yards but struggled with two interceptions and did not throw any touchdowns in the win over Auburn. He also rushed for a touchdown on sixteen carries totaling 28 yards. Ahmad Hardy played a pivotal role in the running game as well, carrying the ball 24 times for 58 yards and scoring two touchdowns; he also made one reception for eleven yards.

Historically, Missouri leads the all-time series against Vanderbilt with a record of 16 wins, three losses, and one tie. This rivalry dates back to their first meeting in 1895 when Missouri won decisively by a score of 16-0. The two teams have faced off a total of twenty-two times, with their most recent encounter occurred last September when Missouri edged out Vanderbilt in double overtime with a score of 30-27.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville.

The stars appear to be aligning for the No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies as they head into Week 9. Under Mike Elko, the Aggies remain undefeated with a record of 7-0 overall and 4-0 in SEC play, following a 45-42 victory against Arkansas in their second road game of the season.

Meanwhile, the LSU Tigers have seen their ranking slip after suffering another road loss to Vanderbilt, bringing their overall record to 5-2 and their conference record to 2-2 as they prepare for a crucial matchup back home in Baton Rouge.

According to ESPN’s FPI predictor, momentum slightly favors Texas A&M heading into this contest. Playing at Death Valley is notoriously challenging, and pressure is mounting for LSU. However, the Aggies hold a slight edge with a predicted win probability of 51.9%, per FPI.

While Texas A&M’s defense faced challenges against Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, it was the Aggies’ offense that shone brightly, amassing nearly 500 yards and scoring on all but two drives. Quarterback Marcel Reed delivered an impressive performance with 280 passing yards, three touchdown passes, and one rushing touchdown.

LSU’s offense is beginning to find its rhythm as it seeks a clearer identity. The Tigers averaged 6.6 yards per play against Vanderbilt and have continued to strengthen defensively, allowing only 14.6 points per game. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will aim to exploit weaknesses in Texas A&M’s defense, which has shown inconsistency and ranks 55th in EPA per play. Notably, last week’s game against Vanderbilt marked the first time this season that LSU scored more than 20 points against a power-conference opponent.

As both teams strive to maintain their momentum in this heated SEC showdown, kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET from Baton Rouge.

It’s going to be a Top-15 matchup in Week 9 as the No. 8 Ole Miss Rebels (6-1) will face off against the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners (6-1) in Norman.

The Rebels are looking to rebound after suffering their first loss of the season, in Athens, where they fell 35-43 to Georgia. Meanwhile, the Sooners secured a solid victory over South Carolina in Week 8, winning 26-7.

As these two teams prepare for their SEC showdown, ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Oklahoma a slight edge with a projected win probability of 55.2%.

Oklahoma quarterback John Matteer played a pivotal role in his team’s success on Saturday, completing 18 of 26 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown without any interceptions. Running back Tory Blaylock contributed significantly with 101 rushing yards on 19 carries and one touchdown. Additionally, Isaiah Sategna made an impact with seven receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown against the Gamecocks.

Kewan Lacy supported him with two rushing touchdowns from his own efforts of 31 yards on twelve carries, while De’Zhaun Stribling recorded three catches for 96 yards and another touchdown.

As we reach the midpoint of the college football season, it’s time to spotlight not just the programs vying for supremacy but also the standout athletes who drive their teams forward. FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt recently named his top five contenders for the prestigious Doak Walker Award, which honors the best running back in college football each year. So, who made Klatt’s cut?

 • Justice Haynes, Michigan: 95 carries for 705 yards and 8 touchdowns.
 • Waymond Jordan, USC: 88 carries for 576 yards and 5 touchdowns.
 • Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame: 100 carries for 530 yards and 8 touchdowns; plus, he has contributed with 14 catches for an additional 160 yards and 3 touchdowns.
 • Jonah Coleman, Washington: 96 carries for 518 yards and an impressive 11 touchdowns; he also caught 20 passes for 243 yards and added another touchdown.

However, it’s Missouri‘s Ahmad Hardy who stands out as Klatt’s frontrunner in this midseason race. With a remarkable resume of 115 carries for 782 yards and 9 touchdown, Hardy has been a force to reckon with on the field. He recorded five consecutive games with over 100 rushing yards before facing off against Alabama in a nail-biting contest that tested his mettle. Notably, he has reached the end zone three times in a single game on two occasions this season—if he maintains this momentum, he could soon hit double digits in touchdowns.

Klatt shared his thoughts on why Hardy is leading the charge.

“Ahmad Hardy at Missouri, been tremendous. Hardy leads the Power Four in rushing in his first season at Missouri. He’s got five straight 100-yard games before that ‘Bama game,” Klatt said. ” … This is the type of guy, though, that allows them to be balanced with Beau Pribula.”

As Hardy looks to keep No.16 Missouri firmly in contention, they will face off against Hugh Freeze’s Auburn team on The Plains this weekend—where Missouri is favored by just -1.5 points! Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. ET from Jordan-Hare Stadium.

As the energy of SEC football fills the air, SEC basketball season is just around the corner! This week, Birmingham played host to the much-anticipated SEC Tipoff event, where men’s and women’s basketball programs gathered to preview the upcoming season. Among them was first-year Auburn head coach Steven Pearl.

In a lighthearted moment during the media preview, Pearl quipped about a decision his father, Bruce Pearl, might be second-guessing: helping Todd Golden secure his coaching position in Gainesville.

When asked about influential coaches in his development as a mentor, Steven fondly mentioned Golden as a key figure.

“He was the one that brought analytics into our program when we first got to Auburn,” Pearl said on Wednesday. “Todd had a really big impact on me as an assistant when he was at Auburn. It’s pretty well-documented that we’ve stayed in touch ever since he left Auburn to go to San Francisco.

Bruce Pearl coached Golden on the 2009 USA Team before bringing him on board as an assistant at Auburn. In 2022, it was Bruce who passionately advocated for Golden’s hiring at Florida as the successor to Mike White. Florida listened, and gained a title as a result.

“I think (Bruce Pearl) might regret that now because Todd has turned into one helluva head coach and they kicked our ass last year a couple times,” Pearl joked.

Since stepping into his role at Florida, Golden has achieved remarkable success, leading his team to clinch the 2025 national championship. Ironically, this former mentee has also secured significant victories against Auburn along the way.

Looking ahead, Steven Pearl and his Auburn Tigers are ranked as the preseason No. 20 team and will tip off their season on Nov. 3 against Bethune-Cookman. Meanwhile, defending national champions Florida are set to launch their campaign against the No. 13 Arizona Wildcats on the same day. Pearl and Golden will face off against each other for the first time on Jan. 26 in Gainesville.

The Third Saturday in October is here, and No. 6 Alabama is set to host No. 11 Tennessee in Week 8. Both teams escaped upsets last weekend, each winning by just 3 points — Tennessee edging past Arkansas with a nail-biting 34-31 victory to improve their record to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while Alabama held off an upset by Missouri, 27-24.

The Crimson Tide’s offense is gaining momentum, led by quarterback Ty Simpson, who showcased his skills by throwing for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns last week.

This matchup represents a pivotal moment for both teams. Tennessee’s Joey Aguilar recently delivered one of his best performances against a Kirby Smart defense, bolstering confidence in the Volunteers’ offensive capabilities. Yet questions linger about Tennessee’s defensive prowess — particularly its secondary — as it heads into hostile territory in Tuscaloosa.

Simpson doesn’t believe the defense is vulnerable, however.

“I honestly don’t think they’re vulnerable at all,” he told reporters this week. “They’re good up front, they’ll play man, they’re physical, they move around, they’re fast. It’s just like an SEC defense. They’re going to cause chaos. They’re going to blitz.

“We’ve got to be on our Ps and Qs. Gotta be disciplined because they’re going to bring everything they’ve got at us. … I don’t think they’re vulnerable at all. I think they’re one of the top defenses in the country.”

Tennessee currently leads the nation in sacks per game, averaging 4.3 a contest. The Vols have 50 tackles for loss and 11 takeaways in 6 games. Simpson has taken 4 sacks in each of Alabama’s last 2 games.

But the Vols’ pass defense also ranks 75th nationally, allowing 7.2 yards per completion. Opposing passers complete 66.5% of their throws against the UT secondary.

The 2 sides square off inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Alabama is an 8.5-point favorite in the game, per BetMGM.

During Wednesday’s SEC teleconference call, Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables announced that wide receiver Jayden Gibson is no longer part of the Sooners’ roster.

Gibson had not played since the 2023 season, where he made 14 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. Unfortunately, after suffering a knee injury during preseason camp last year, he missed all of 2024 and then all of spring ball in Norman earlier this year.

The Sooners have leaned on talented receivers Isaiah Sategna, Keontez Lewis, and Deion Burks. Even with Gibson’s return from injury, it was evident that Oklahoma’s receiver rotation would struggle to integrate him.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Gibson is expected to hit the transfer portal and explore his options following his exit from the team.

As for Oklahoma, it is set to hit the road this week for a matchup with Shane Beamer and South Carolina.

After a disappointing defeat in the Red River Rivalry against Texas, the Sooners are eager to bounce back. With a current record of 5-1 and 1-1 in the SEC, OU still has a chance to make an SEC Championship Game appearance, but it can’t let 1 loss snowball.

Kickoff against the Gamecocks is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. ET in Columbia.

As the sun sets over Death Valley, anticipation builds for the SEC showdown between Shane Beamer’s South Carolina Gamecocks and the No. 11 LSU Tigers. Both teams are eager to make a statement in Week 7 after enjoying a much-needed bye week.

According to ESPN’s FPI projections, LSU holds a significant advantage with a 73% chance of victory compared to South Carolina’s 27%. The Bayou Bengals are looking to bounce back after a narrow loss to Lane Kiffin’s No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels, falling 24-19 in Week 5. This setback left them with an overall record of 4-1 and a conference mark of 1-1.

Meanwhile, the Gamecocks come off an impressive win against Kentucky, triumphing 35-13, but their season has been marred by losses to Vanderbilt and Missouri, leaving them at 3-2 overall and 1-2 in SEC play.

Both squads are keen on addressing lingering questions about their personnel as they strive for consistency. LSU’s offense has averaged just 27 points per game against FBS opponents—a stark contrast to their struggles that see that number drop to only 19 points when facing tougher defenses. With passing yards ranking them at a disappointing 90th out of 136 FBS teams (averaging just 259 yards) and rushing yards sitting at a mere 105, they have room for improvement.

South Carolina finds itself even lower on the rushing charts, ranking last in the SEC with only 99.8 yards per game. Its passing game is also struggling, placing them dead last in scoring within the conference.

Kickoff is set for 6:45 PM from Death Valley.

As the Arkansas Razorbacks hit the road to take on the No. 15 Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium, they find themselves in dire need of a turnaround. With a shaky start to their season, standing at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in SEC play, can the Razorbacks finally catch a break?

Unfortunately for Arkansas, the odds are stacked against them. According to ESPN’s FPI Week 7 projections, Tennessee is favored with an impressive 82.6% chance of securing a victory at home, leaving Arkansas with just a 17.4% shot at an upset.

Arkansas has struggled mightily on defense this year, most recently in its 56-13 loss to Notre Dame a couple of weeks ago.

In contrast, Tennessee is riding high after their recent win against Mississippi State. Quarterback Joey Aguilar has amassed an impressive 1,459 passing yards and thrown for 13 touchdowns this season. His favorite target, Chris Brazzell, has been electric as well, racking up 31 receptions for 531 yards and seven touchdowns. The Volunteers have found their rhythm on both sides of the ball and are poised to control the game from the outset.

For Arkansas to have any hope of pulling off an upset in Neyland Stadium tonight, their defense must awaken from its slumber. Mistakes and missed big plays will only prolong what could be a challenging night against Tennessee’s dynamic offense.

Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers are still hunting for their first SEC win of the season. This week they look to make that happen this weekend against the No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs

According to this weeks ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), the odds are stacked against Auburn, with Georgia holding a 64.5% chance of winning compared to Auburn’s 35.5%. The Tigers have struggled in conference play, starting the season with two losses against Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

One glaring issue for Auburn has been its pass protection; Arnold has been sacked 14 times over their last two SEC games.

On the other side of the field, Georgia is riding high on an impressive offensive performance this season, averaging 34.6 points per game. Quarterback Gunner Stockton has added a dynamic element to their attack with his mobility, amassing 194 rushing yards and five touchdowns so far.

Georgia has won 8 consecutive games in this series.

Just when you think the Florida Gators are down for the count, they find a way to pull off something out of left field. After taking down the Texas Longhorns in Week 6, Billy Napier’s squad has its sights set on taking down another Texas team. The Gators head to College Station to face Mike Elko’s No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies.

According to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI), the odds favor Texas A&M under the bright lights of Kyle Field, giving them a 73.9% chance of victory.

The Aggies are riding high with their best start since 2016 at 5-0 and are firmly in the conversation for the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Marcel Reed has been impressive, leading an explosive offense that features playmakers like Mario Craver and KC Conception, both combining 1,000 total yards and contributed 11 touchdowns this season.

Florida will be looking to create some chaos on Saturday night with standout performances from running back Jaden Baugh—who rushed for over 100 yards against Texas—and newcomer Dallas Wilson, who made an impactful debut against the Longhorns and could be the key factor in tearing down the Aggie Secondary unit.

Playing at Kyle Field at night is notoriously challenging; however, Florida has managed to win two out of three all-time meetings with Texas A&M—including a decisive 41-24 victory in 2022.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET in College Station.

All eyes will be on the Cotton Bowl this Saturday for one of college football’s most storied traditions—the Red River Rivalry.

This marks the 121st edition, where emotions run high and pride is on the line. The Texas Longhorns, currently holding a 3-2 record, will face off against the undefeated No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners, who remain perfect at 5-0 this season.

Despite recent struggles that have left Texas grappling with an identity crisis, the Longhorns remain favored by ESPN’s FPI projections. ESPN’s model gives Texas a 60.9% chance to secure the win on Saturday at the Texas State Fair.

A key question looms over this rivalry: Will John Mateer return for Oklahoma? This could significantly impact the game dynamics. If he’s unable to play as he continues to recover from a hand injury, Oklahoma would turn to Michael Hawkins Jr. at quarterback.

On the other side of the field, Arch Manning will be hoping to play a cleaner game against the Sooners. Manning has already thrown 5 interceptions in his first 5 games so far this year.

Alabama will head out on the road this weekend for another top-25 matchup, this time against Mizzou. This is a matchup of potential contenders for the College Football Playoff this year.

But how does ESPN’s FPI foresee this showdown playing out? Despite Missouri’s impressive ascent—highlighted by one of the most explosive offenses in the nation—the analytics favor Kalen DeBoer’s squad with a solid 63.4% chance of victory.

Historically, these two teams have faced off just eight times, with Alabama dominating the series by winning the last six encounters. The Tide enters this contest off a hard-fought victory against Georgia in Athens, while Missouri is riding high after a strong performance against South Carolina, securing a 29-20 win that showcased their resilience in overcoming a halftime deficit.

As the Bayou Bengals gear up for their next challenge, they are eager to reset and refocus after a much-needed bye week. Currently sitting at 4-1, LSU‘s last outing was a tough road loss against Lane Kiffin’s No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels.

LSU’s offensive unit has faced significant challenges—failing to score more than 20 points against three Power Four opponents thus far. This lack of production has left them ranked as the fifth-worst offense in the conference.

However, hope is on the horizon as head coach Brian Kelly provided some encouraging injury updates crucial for their upcoming matchup against Shane Beamer’s squad in Week 7.

Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, running back Caden Durham and offensive lineman Weston Davis are all set to play. Aaron Anderson is “probable” at this stage in the week, per Kelly.

Getting the offense back on track will be vital if LSU hopes to fend off an upset-minded South Carolina team eager to reenter the College Football Playoff conversation.

Despite their struggles, LSU is favored by 9 points against South Carolina according to the latest college football betting lines. Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. ET.

The Georgia Bulldogs took down the Kentucky Wildcats 35-14 in Week 6, improving their record to 4-1 and leaving their recent loss to Alabama firmly in the rearview mirror. However, as the season progresses, the challenges intensify, bringing with them the risk of injuries to key players.

The offensive line faced a significant blow in their victory over Kentucky when left tackle Monroe Freeling was forced to exit early due to an ankle injury sustained on just the opening series. Unfortunately for Georgia, he was unable to return to the game.

As preparations ramp up for their upcoming showdown in The Plains, Freeling’s status remains uncertain. Head coach Kirby Smart expressed cautious optimism regarding his condition Monday.

“He has an ankle injury, but it isn’t as severe as we thought. Not going to require surgery or anything,” Smart said.

Georgia is hopeful to get Freeling back, but he won’t be able to practice Monday.

Now Georgia shifts its focus towards Hugh Freeze’s Auburn Tigers under the bright lights of Jordan-Hare Stadium for Week 7—kickoff set for 7:30 PM ET

Week 6 delivered yet another whirlwind of surprises and upsets. Now, as we gear up for Week 7, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt shared his latest top 10 rankings following this weekend’s dramatic shakeups.

Here’s a look at the top 10:

10. Oklahoma

9. Georgia

8. Texas Tech

7. Alabama

6. Indiana

5. Ole Miss

4. Texas A&M

3. Miami

2. Oregon

1. Ohio State

A potential dark horse to keep your eyes on could be Joey Mcguire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders out of the Big 12.

“An Impressive Big 12 team Texas Tech, Guys I am just telling you. I know what am looking at,” Klatt said. “There are teams with good records and then there are just really good teams. They’re just a really, really good team. I know they’re undefeated. The score against Houston was not indicative of the game being played.”

Klatt also shared his thoughts on Texas A&M — his highest-ranked SEC team entering Week 7.

“You thought it was just offensive when we saw them against Notre Dame, the speed on the outside and Marcel Reed playing so well,” Klatt said. “But it’s the defense that’s been so good over the last couple of games … They have been incredible! They have only given 1 third-down conversion in their last 23. That’s an insane number.”

Texas A&M will have another big test this weekend as it welcomes Florida to College Station.

ESPN has updated its NFL Draft projection for UCLA quarterback and former Tennessee star Nico Iamaleava.

Iamaleava got off to a slow start at UCLA in 2025, but helped the Bruins to a stunning upset win over Penn State on Saturday.

ESPN analyst Jordan Reid weighed in on how this game could impact Iamaleava’s future in the NFL ahead of the 2026 draft.

“Iamaleava made multiple impressive throws against the stingy Nittany Lions defense,” Reid noted. “His rushing ability was the real separator between his first four games and Week 6; he kept drives alive with his legs, generating explosive plays.”

As they say, good things come to those who wait—and Reid believes that time will only enhance Iamaleava’s potential.

“Iamaleava possesses dual-threat traits and a big arm,” Reid added. “However, he still needs time to develop.” Reid reiterated that he is just a redshirt sophomore with only 19 career starts under his belt, he remains inconsistent with accuracy and decision-making.

“I don’t expect Iamaleava to declare for the 2026 draft. I’d put him in the Day 3 conversation right now for next year, but it makes sense for him to keep developing before entering the 2027 or even 2028 class.”

The former blue-chip recruit appears to have finally awakened a sleeping giant within himself as he leads this revitalized Bruin offense into their next challenge. In Week 7, UCLA will hit the road to face Michigan State with kickoff set for Noon ET.

Jeff Brohm suggests Georgia might be trying to back out of Louisville series https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/jeff-brohm-suggests-georgia-might-be-trying-to-back-out-of-louisville-series/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 21:21:40 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=510258 Louisville coach Jeff Brohm suggested Georgia might be looking to back out of the future home-and-home series between the programs.

As we look ahead to the 2026 season, it’s clear that both the SEC and ACC will undergo significant transformations with their transition to a 9-game conference schedule. One key requirement for SEC teams is that they must face at least one non-conference opponent from another power conference.

Some teams have multiple future out-of-conference games on the books against such teams, like Georgia.

In 2026, the Bulldogs will travel to Louisville to face Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals. In 2027, the Cards return the trip to Athens to face Kirby Smart and Co.

During his weekly coaches show on Wednesday night, Brohm suggested the series might not happen.

“Well, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say. We want to play Georgia. We’ve gathered some information, and I don’t want to speak out of tune, but I don’t know if it’s vice versa,” Brohm said. “I’m hopeful that we can play the game, but I don’t know where that’s at right now.”

The Bulldogs already have a longstanding rivalry with Georgia Tech that plays out every season. They are slated to face Florida State in Tallahassee in 2027 as well. With 9 league games and some uncertainty still surrounding the College Football Playoff, the future game against Louisville appears to be in jeopardy.

Brohm, to his credit, emphasized his commitment to crafting a challenging schedule that enhances the quality of the Louisville program.

“I am a football guy just like you guys are. I want to see good games, and if that means we have a super tough schedule, then I am all for it,” he said. “I want to compete and I want our players and fans to be a part of great competition and play great opponents. So I would hope that we could do that, but we’ll see.”

It remains to be seen if Georgia answers the call and keeps its word in 2026. For now, though, Louisville remains focused on its immediate challenge as it prepares to host No. 24 Virginia in Week 6.

Week 6 of college football is here, and all eyes are set on Athens, Georgia, where the Wildcats and Bulldogs prepare for a pivotal SEC showdown. After facing tough losses in Week 5, both Kentucky and Georgia find themselves at a crossroads—this weekend is nothing short of a must-win for either team to keep their SEC dreams alive.

Throughout Mark Stoops‘ tenure, Kentucky has shown an uncanny ability to pull off stunning upsets, often fueled by its gritty determination. This week, the Wildcats aim to channel that fighting spirit as they hit the road clad in their striking blue-and-white striped helmets, complemented by crisp white jerseys and power blue pants—a fresh look unveiled on Thursday.

However, the challenge ahead is daunting. Despite recent setbacks—including a loss to Alabama—the Bulldogs under Kirby Smart won’t fade that easily. Even with the recent trials the Dawgs have faced, the analytics still favor Georgia. ESPN’s FPI has the Bulldogs as a heavy favorite with a 90.3% chance of victory, compared to the Wildcats’ 9.7% chance.

Georgia is also favored by a hefty 20.5 points at BetMGM. Kentucky must not only look the part but play the part extremely well at Sanford Stadium if it doesn’t want to be embarrassed in Week 6.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on ABC.

Joel Klatt makes spread pick for Alabama vs. Vanderbilt https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/news/college-football/joel-klatt-makes-spread-pick-for-alabama-vs-vanderbilt/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 19:43:52 +0000 https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/?p=509541 Will Vanderbilt spoil Alabama's plans again? Joel Klatt breaks down the crucial Alabama vs Vanderbilt game and its implications.

The post Joel Klatt makes spread pick for Alabama vs. Vanderbilt appeared first on Saturday Down South.

]]>
While Vanderbilt may not be the perennial favorite in the SEC, it certainly has a knack for playing spoiler. Last season, the Commodores shocked the college football world by toppling Alabama, and the Commodores are looking to do it again, bringing an even stronger roster. Prior to that stunning upset, Alabama held a commanding 63-18-4 record against Vanderbilt, boasting a decade-long streak. But then chaos ensued—and Diego Pavia emerged as a game-changer.

As the Dores roll into Bryant-Denny Stadium with an impressive 5-0 record—having secured decisive victories over South Carolina and Virginia Tech—they face their toughest test yet. On the other hand, Alabama has rebounded impressively since its loss to Florida State and is coming off a hard-fought 24-21 victory against Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs.

So how will this clash unfold in T-Town? FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt recently weighed in.

“The one thing I’m going to lean on here is that Alabama is terrific at home,” Klatt said.

The X-factor for Vanderbilt has undoubtedly been veteran quarterback Diego Pavia. With over 1,200 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and just three interceptions while completing an impressive 75% of his passes, he’s proven himself capable of leading his team effectively. Yet, Alabama’s defense has tightened up significantly since that fateful loss to the Seminoles; they haven’t allowed more than 155 passing yards per game during this stretch.

“(Vanderbilt) will get the full attention from this Bama team. Bama is 35-1 in their last 36 at home. So I like Bama to win, but I like Diego Pavia and this Vanderbilt team to stay close in this game. So I think Bama wins this one,” Klatt added.

In addition to picking the winner straight up, Klatt also made a spread pick. Alabama is favored by 10.5 points.

“I’m going to take that half point and say 31-21 Bama wins,” Klatt said. “They beat Vandy, but not by more than 10.5 (points). So I’m going to take the points and take Vandy against the spread.”

This matchup promises to be an eye-for-an-eye battle; Vanderbilt won’t back down easily and possesses enough talent to challenge the Tide even in Tuscaloosa. However, despite their momentum, the Commodores haven’t faced a passing attack as potent as what Alabama is set to unleash upon them. Both defenses have struggled to get off the field lately; however, there’s simply no underestimating the Tide when they’re at home.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET, broadcasting live on ABC.

Things are a bit murkier than ever down in the Swamp as the No. 9 Texas Longhorns are set to clash with Billy Napier’s Florida Gators. With the Gators reeling from three consecutive losses, speculation about Napier’s future is swirling like fog over The Swamp.

Both squads enter this contest eager for clarity after well-timed bye weeks. On paper, Texas appears to hold a slight advantage, bolstered by a formidable defense that has allowed just 7.7 points per game. Meanwhile, Florida’s offense has struggled mightily; quarterback DJ Lagway has been plagued by turnovers, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. The Gators have managed to score only 33 points across their last three games against Miami, LSU, and South Florida.

Even with home-field advantage, Florida faces an uphill battle against a Longhorn defensive unit that thrives on pressure and disruption.

In a recent episode of the Always College Football podcast, analyst Greg McElroy weighed in on this critical matchup:

“I’m taking Texas, but I think this game will be close,” McElroy said. “A lot of it will depend on how healthy Florida is on the defensive line. If they somehow return to full strength, I could see this being a complete dogfight. And if all those guys are out of the lineup, I don’t know how they’re going to hold up for 60 minutes. So watch the injury report closely.”

Under head coach Steve Sarkisian, Texas has thrived in road environments over his tenure—winning an impressive 11 straight away games. While they may not have had their breakout moment yet this season, all signs point toward Saturday being their time to shine. Even if Florida can field a healthy defense,if Arch Manning is utilized more as a runner—a role where he has excelled with an average of seven rushes per game, it could be trouble for the Gators.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET from The Swamp in Gainesville.

The Texas Longhorns prepare to kick off their SEC slate, all eyes will be on them as they face off against Billy Napier’s Florida Gators in a highly-anticipated matchup in the Swamp.

ESPN’s SP+ is back to predict how this one plays out in the SEC. Despite some recent struggles, the Longhorns are aiming for a fresh start after their bye week, and SP+ suggests they hold a significant edge over Florida with a projected final score of 26-17.

DJ Lagway’s potential for a comeback could turn the tide quickly. If he finds his rhythm, expect Florida to match that energy with speed and skill that could challenge even the toughest defenses especially playing at home. Like Texas, Florida is also coming into this game off of a bye week.

Arch Manning has immense potential and is surrounded by elite talent that could help steer Texas back on track — especially if Tre Wisner returns to bolster their backfield. The Longhorns are hoping to pick up their first SEC win of the season on Saturday.

The No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies (4-0, 1-0 SEC) stand tall among the five undefeated teams in the SEC. This Saturday night they will host Mississippi State (4-1, 0-1 SEC).

ESPN’s FPI projections give the Aggies a commanding edge with a 78.9% chance of victory compared to the Bulldogs’ 21.1 percent. But that doesn’t stop Mississippi State from looking to defy the odds and turn this game into a thriller.

The Aggies are coming off of a victory against Auburn last week, winning 16-10. Quarterback Marcel Reed threw for 207 yards on 15 of 22 passing attempts with one interception and no touchdowns. Meanwhile, running back Le’Von Moss found his rhythm again with an impressive performance, racking up 139 rushing yards on 21 carries and scoring one touchdown.

On the other side of the field, Mississippi State faced a tough challenge against Josh Hepuel’s Tennessee Vols last week, falling short 41-34. This Saturday, the Vanderbilt Commodores are hitting the road to Tuscaloosa, bringing with them an impressive No. 16 ranking and an undefeated record of 5-0 and 1-0 in the SEC.

Meanwhile, the No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide are looking to build on their recent momentum after the win over Georgia, currently sitting at 3-1 with 1-0 in conference play.

Vanderbilt has been on fire lately, scoring an astounding 50 points in each of its last two games against Georgia State and Utah State. Quarterback Diego Pavia has electrified fans with his performance, throwing for six touchdowns against Utah State, tying Vanderbilt’s single-game record. Yet despite this offensive surge, ESPN’s Football Power Index remains skeptical about its chances against the Tide, giving Alabama a 74.3% chance of victory compared to Vanderbilt’s 25.7%.

Since suffering an early-season loss to Florida State, Alabama has rebounded impressively, winning three consecutive games and aiming for a fourth straight triumph in Week 6. Ty Simpson has been instrumental in this resurgence showcasing clean and effective football with an impressive tally of 11 touchdowns and no interceptions as their starting quarterback.

The No. 9 Texas Longhorns are coming off of a much-needed bye week, giving them the chance to regroup after an up-and-down September.

Quarterback Arch Manning, too, has been searching for a reset. Now as they prepare to hit the road to the Swamp for a showdown against the Florida Gators, all eyes will be on how they bounce back.

According to ESPN’s FPI, Texas is favored to win this matchup with a projected 76.7% chance of victory compared to Florida’s 23.3%. While questions linger about Texas’s offensive strategy, one thing is clear: their top 10 defense poses a strong challenge for Florida’s DJ Lagway and his teammates as they enter Week 6.

On the other side of the field, Florida finds itself in a precarious position, desperately seeking to snap its losing streak. Lagway has struggled lately, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns and appearing shaken in high-pressure games against LSU and Miami.

Texas is 3-0-1 all-time against the Gators. Last season, these teams met in Austin as the Longhorns won 49-17 in blowout fashion. The only meeting between these storied programs in Gainesville came away back in 1940.
